Grab a pickaxe and your best diamond armour, today we’re taking a deep dive into the Minecraft theme! The theme first launched in 2012 as a part of the LEGO CUUSO (renamed to IDEAS) line and has been giving us sets from the blocky world ever since! Let’s take a look at how the theme has inspired different builders!

Tips and Bricks logo. #2505 THEME TRIBUTE: Minecraft (2012-Present) In today’s theme tribute, we’re heading to the blocky world of Minecraft! With Minecraft’s 15th anniversary this year, we wanted to reflect on its 12-year history with LEGO! Let’s dig in!

About Minecraft: In 2012, the first set released in the LEGO IDEAS line, in the Micro World scale! In 2014, the first minifigure scale sets launched and are continuing to this day! In 2019, a line of buildable figures was introduced for two waves! In 2024, a micro build scale returned in set 21265! As of 2024, the theme consists of over 140 sets: from play sets, polybags and magazine gifts!

Minifigures: Steve and Alex have been in many sets, but sets in recent years have featured a variety of new player characters! Mobs: Many animal and enemy mobs have new parts for more accurate designs.

The Minecraft theme has adapted many characters and biomes from the original game, giving builders the chance to recreate all different scenes and places in their own MOCs. The MOC is built with swivel plates (2429c01), allowing it to be opened and displayed in different ways! @cheeseystudios shows the theme’s style of building can work for larger scale MOCs. This build features multiple scenes on the overworld and in the caves below.

Edge_of_bricks’ ocean highlights the beauty of Minecraft’s coral reefs! The Trans-Dark Blue bricks and tiles create a shining ocean roof. The kelp is created from plant bricks (4727), and the vines of kelp help to support the ocean build above it.

Different builders have created habitat builds to recreate a variety of biomes from the game, like this great collection by skyguy.365! Habitat builds have been a perfect way to highlight the games’ different settings and mobs!

The different mobs are iconic from the game, and their blocky appearance make them perfect for accurate LEGO adaptions! This bee uses Trans-Clear 1x2 plates to create the wings! This pink axolotl by @brick.folk uses tow balls for the legs to swim, and the head uses round corners (27925) to capture the gills!

The Enderman is a classic Minecraft enemy, introduced in 2011. This MOC gives the Enderman more articulation, adding to its threatening look! Even the mobs not featured in the final game have been built in brick-form by LEGO fans, like the Glare and Copper Golem!

@bobrobert_brick takes a different approach, adapting the Minecraft world outside its normal blocky art style! This village uses custom designs for minifigures and gives the village a classic wooden décor!

MOC builders have been creating scenes within blocks long before LEGO’s take on the idea! A lush jungle biome is filled with explorers! A light brick is used under the lava to add the fiery glow! Thanks for looking at the Minecraft theme with us! What are your experiences with this adventurous blocky theme?
