#1314 SET REVIEWS: Ninjago ‘The Island’ sets – Part 2

Updated: May 1, 2021

Today we're reviewing 2 sets from the upcoming Ninjago season 'The Island'! We were sent these sets by LEGO but our view is our own and unbiased. We aim to provide a unique review from the perspective of a MOC builder and fan of building techniques.

First up is the 71745: Lloyd's Jungle Chopper Bike: to some just another bike, but we really enjoyed the green and gold colour scheme, extra speeder that detaches as well as the excellent minifigure selection.

The largest set of the wave is 71748: Catamaran Sea Battle, which gives you 2 ships for both the ninjas and villains. We again loved the colour scheme and clever functions, and how unique this set is compared to others in the wave.

However for the entire wave of Island sets, we were disappointed to see LEGO’s portrayal of Indigenous-inspired people as primitive stereotypes. The minifigures do not celebrate or even reference the culture they take inspiration from – LEGO can do better.

We also took a quick look at the latest Junior Ninjago set, that doesn’t offer much unless you want the minifigure or the rare parts.

Let us know your thoughts on these sets and the Island wave of Ninjago sets!
