Today's technique uses offsetting to its extremes in a wall design. It was created by Tim Johnson, and he calls it the "Groovy Jumper"! Check out his post on Flickr here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/timjohnsonlego/6756111137/
As seen in the picture, Tim has used a combination of 1x2 "jumper" plates as well as 1x4 modified bricks with grooves. This creates recesses in the wall, that make it look textured or even damaged.
As well as walls, it also has the application of lettering; I love Tim's 'H' which looks great with the half stud recess.
